Practical Projects

I firmly believe the best way to improve your skills, is with deliberate practice & practical projects. Each lesson is structured to focus on one key element of animation.

We’ll be creating a specific animated project for that element and through that lens, we’ll learn how to apply new techniques within a professional workflow.

I’ll also show you how to get the best results from any project when you’re limited by time and budget.

Week 1 – Foundation

In the first week of this course, we’ll be covering the foundation of the 12 principles of animation, focusing in detail on anticipation and overlapping action. In that process we’re building this scene, using those principles and pulling out some advanced techniques to emphasize their impact.
Week 5 – Creativity
This week you’ll have some time to breathe and reflect on the intensity of the first half of the course. There is a much shorter lesson focussed on creative thinking skills & a bonus exercise for those who want to flex their creative muscles. This is an opportunity to catch up on previous assignments.
Week 2 – Workflow

In Week 2 we drill down into the details of a professional process and workflow. How to approach file organization, blocking animation, animating with arcs, and what to think about while we’re working.
Week 6 – Effects & Colour

This week you’ll learn just about as many tips, techniques and effects that you can handle.
Not all animation is getting buttery smooth keyframes. Here we’re focussing on effects-driven animation, how to build systems inside After Effects to give you a unique result with maximum flexibility. We’re building these 3 projects.
Week 3 – Transitions

You’ll learn how to animate an amazing transition. How to give it more impact, or make it invisible. We’ll break down this animation into its simplest components, execute them in the most efficient way we can, then top it off with additional flame effects to sell the motion.

Week 7 – Character Animation pt. 1

The last 2 weeks will be building a crowded character scene. In pt.1 You’ll learn character rigging, the secrets of creating a seamless walk cycle. And how to use that same rig on multiple characters. We’re using the free plugin Duik-Bassel for rigging, so no extra expense there.
Week 4 – Morphing

This week is pure keyframe magic. You’ll learn how to approach 4 different styles of morphing animation. How to accomplish something similar when you’ve got limited time. How pacing can sell a story and what thought process goes into every keyframe to make the whole scene come together.
Week 8 – Character Animation pt. 2

In the final week, we’re putting everything we’ve learned into this final scene, giving our character the illusion of life.
Using our character rig to tell the story and add nuance to their motion. We’re also bringing all our walk cycle characters in adding depth and parallax to the scene.
