New features:

Roto Brush 2

Roto Brush 2 is a faster and more accurate rotoscoping tool that separates a foreground object from its background. Powered by Sensei, Roto Brush 2 selects and tracks the object, frame by frame, isolating the subject automatically. You can identify the subject by drawing a rough stroke through it. After Effects automatically highlights the selection around the edges, and tracks the object. If you don’t like the selection, you can simply add or remove areas of the selection using intuitive keyboard commands.

Though the UI remains the same overall, Roto Brush 2 is different because it uses machine learning solution to propagate selections over time making the tedious process of rotoscoping a quick and easy task.

Work in the 3D Design Space

Developing 3D content is a common workflow for motion designers today. This release introduces a new mode to help you design and composite 3D content natively in After Effects. You don’t have to constantly jump back and forth between 3D applications just to animate a single scene. This mode helps you make working in 3D faster and more approachable. This release introduces the 3D Transform Gizmos, and Improved camera tools in the 3D Design Space.

3D Transform Gizmo
The 3D Transform Gizmos allow you to rotate, scale and position a camera. Similar to Adobe Dimension, the 3D Transform Gizmo gives you the power to see how far you have repositioned the camera, the amount of rotation you have applied, and how small or large you have scaled. The camera can also be controlled using the new keyboard shortcuts, which make it easier to switch between them. Instead of having to select a specific gizmo, you can hold down the option key on your keyboard and use different mouse buttons (left, middle and right) to orbit, dolly and position the camera. When done, simply deselect the option button, and you are right back to the original tool you were using.
Improved camera tools for navigating 3D

Improved camera tools for navigating 3D space give you more flexibility and control over the objects in your scene. Unlike earlier versions where you can only orbit around the center of your screen, you can now select a focal point and orbit, pan, and dolly around a scene layer, viewing it from every angle.

If you have a particular framing of a shot in your composition, it helps to apply a camera viewpoint to refer to. As soon as you make a 2D layer 3D, you are instantly able to move around in 3D space because the camera is applied automatically. You can now animate from this viewpoint. This makes it more intuitive and fluid when combining 2D and 3D elements together.

The camera controls are now quicker to access with spring-loaded keyboard and mouse shortcuts, something artists expect from other 3D applications. Instead of having to select a camera tool directly, you can use the numbers (1, 2, 3) on your keyboard or hold down the option/alt key and use your mouse buttons (left, middle and right) to orbit, pan and dolly your camera.

With the latest After Effects design in a whole new dimension using dedicated 3D-related features such as native model import, alignment tools, Image-Based Lighting, and high-fidelity, GPU-accelerated renders.
3D Model Import
3D Model Import in After Effects allows you to import 3D model files in GLTF and GLB formats and render them in the same 3D space as native After Effects cameras, lights, and other 3D layers.

3D model files can be imported from your local disk or from your Creative Cloud Libraries.

Image-Based Lighting
Use 360-degree High Dynamic Range Image (HDRI) files as a light source to realistically place 3D models into a scene with complementary lighting and shadows. Image-Based Lighting uses an image to produce realistic lighting, reflections, and shadows on 3D layers by surrounding the scene with an image-based environment map. Be it a subtle lighting effect or strong shadows, Image-Based Lighting enables you to ensure that your 3D objects appear as though they naturally belong to the environment your animation needs.

Advanced 3D renderer
A new high-quality, performance-oriented composition renderer – Advanced 3D, enables you to render beautiful 3D motion graphics with high-quality antialiasing and transparency. Advanced 3D has an underlying rendering engine shared with other Adobe and Substance products and uses Adobe Standard Material properties for physically-based rendering.

Advanced 3D allows rendering of:

Imported 3D models in GLTF and GLB format.
Environment lights for realistic Image-Based Lighting and shadow using HDRI files.
Other 3D layers, such as extruded text and shape layers, cameras, and lights.
Physically-based rendering of 3D models and other 3D layers in a unified space.
Materials for 3D layers such as text, shapes, and solids.
The 3D Renderer dropdown menu shows the list of options available – Classic 3D, Advanced 3D, Cinema 4D, and Renderer Options. Currently, the Advanced 3D is selected from the list of renderers.
Select Advanced 3D renderer for your 3D compositions and natively render a wide variety of 3D objects and scenes.

2D/3D interoperability
You can combine 3D assets such as 3D models or extruded text and shapes with 2D ones in your compositions. This increased flexibility in After Effects allows you to mix 2D and 3D elements to create more visually stunning and engaging animations within a single space.
The Composition panel has both 2D and 3D elements and shows After Effects ability to seamlessly combine both 2D and 3D elements within a single composition.

Animated lights and cameras
You can extract lights and cameras from GLB and GLTF models in a composition. When you import a 3D scene with light and camera data, After Effects automatically creates new light and camera layers. If the lights or cameras are animated, keyframes will be created too.

3D Snapping
You can now snap layers in 3D space while dragging the constrained X, Y, and Z position handles of the 3D Gizmo. This includes the XY, XZ, and YZ combo handles of the 3D position gizmo. You can use both constrained and non-constrained snapping while working with 3D model layers to align and position your 3D layers and objects with pixel-perfect accuracy.

3D model-driven effects
Combine 2D and 3D workflows in one composition by using the rendered frame of a 3D model layer as a source. This workflow enables you to apply 2D effects to portions of 3D scenes and create highly stylized renders using effects that reference another layer, such as Displacement Map, Vector Blur, Calculations, and more.

The Displacement Map effect settings are displayed in the Effects Control panel. It has the layer with the 3D models selected as the source for the displacement effect.
Use the 3D model-driven effects and specify the 3D model layer as the source for the effect.

Refreshed animation presets
The refreshed existing presets include updated and enhanced animation effects that incorporate more modern design elements. The refresh focused on a simplified configuration process also features a collection of new presets.
The Effects & Presets panel is open and lists all animation presets available in After Effects including the newly refreshed ones.
Use the refreshed animation presets in After Effects to create modern and engaging animations.
