Course syllabus.

Moving around in 3D
You’ll build up your 3D skills with targeted exercises designed to develop muscle memory in Cinema 4D. Then it’s time to create your very first 3D render by combining 3D shapes while learning some basic material, lighting, and composition.

Many ways to Model
Discover the geometric building blocks of 3D modeling in Cinema 4D. This week, you’ll focus on fundamental modeling concepts and techniques that will equip you with the tools and techniques to approach common modeling challenges.

Lighting & Materials
Master the art of lighting—one of the crucial aspects of a Cinema 4D render. You’ll learn lighting theory, ways to create realistic lighting, and shadows. By the end of this week you’ll know how to make beautiful renders in any renderer!

Becoming a 3D artist
Take a week off to focus on any lessons and homework you’re behind on. We’ll also give insights on approaching something as complex as a 3D package. Look out for a cameo from Beeple (if you don’t know Beeple, now’s a great time to Google).

Animating in 3D
Refresh your understanding of animation fundamentals and how they translate into 3D space in Cinema 4D. Gain clarity on the essentials of keyframe animation, understand the workings of C4D’s graph editor, and discover dynamic movement.

Getting fancy with MoGraph
Enhance your Cinema 4D course learning with mograph tools, designed to streamline complex modeling and animation tasks (that would otherwise take hours!). Rapidly modify models, animate with ease, clone objects, and swap parameters quickly!

Speed up your workflow
Another down week to focus on work! We’ll also go into the weeds a bit to talk about scene management. You’ll learn the tricks of the trade on how to keep your scenes nice and optimized to save on your render times.

Designing in 3D
Explore designing great compositions by applying real-world photography and cinema concepts to 3D. Revisit design basics and integrate them into the 3D realm for creating stunning images.

Cameras and Compositions
Learn to use camera tools and staging principles to craft well-composed scenes and dynamic movements in 3D. Become a skilled cinematographer with Cinema 4D Basecamp, mastering the essentials of strong composition.

Compositing 3D in After Effects
After building your 3D scene in Cinema 4D, the final 10% is about compositing to enhance your render. Learn how to render passes from Redshift and comp them in After Effects. Then, apply all you’ve learned to tackle your final project!

Extended Critique Period
The final weeks of class are Extended Critique. You can use this time to catch up, complete your final project, then turn it in for critique.

Learn Cinema 4D from the Ground Up
Understanding the basics of Cinema 4D is like having a superpower. Adding 3D to your toolkit is one of the best ways to up your value and expand your capabilities as a Motion Designer. The trouble is, Cinema 4D can be tricky to learn. School of Motion, a Maxon Certified Training Partner, can get you comfortable in Cinema 4D in just a few weeks. This class is designed for artists with little to no experience in the software, getting you up to speed on all of the key aspects of Cinema 4D.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR
EJ Hassenfratz
EJ Hassenfratz is a multi-Emmy award winning Motion Design artist & tutorial artist based out of the Mile High city of Denver, CO. EJ comes from a family of designers. Both his father and uncle were Art Directors for broadcast news stations, where EJ cut his teeth in the industry. Inspired by his wife who teaches special-needs children, he started Eyedesyn, a motion design blog to give back to the community that helped him be successful in the field of Motion Design. He’s been fortunate to work with clients like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Coca-Cola, Nike, ESPN, and the NHL’s Washington Capitals.

Meet your classmates, get comfy with the course format and dive right in with your first project designed to build that muscle memory!

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
Familiarize Yourself with the Course
Cinema4D Keyboard Shortcuts
Navigating the C4D Interface

Nothing happens in 3D until there’s some geometry, and in the first week you’ll learn about all the various ways to create it. You’ll use primitives, splines, generators, and you’ll even get a crash course in some basic modeling techniques.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
Basic Modeling Techniques
Using Splines
Generating Geometry

In the world of 3D it’s lighting that shapes your image. You’ll learn the basics of lighting techniques, ways to create more realistic lighting and shadows, how to control reflections, and other ways to light the scene besides using… ya know, lights.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
Basic Lighting Techniques
Creating a Mood with Lighting
Different Material Properties

Take a week off to focus on any lessons and homework you’re behind on. We’ll also use this time to give you some insights on how to approach learning something as complex and deep as a 3D package. Watch out for a cameo from Beeple.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
